Rumors Suggest New Venom PS5 Game in Development

Rumors are stirring once again about Insomniac Games' previously announced Venom spin-off for the PlayStation 5. The game was first revealed through their announcement during the 2023 Spider-Man 2 game announcement, but was later revealed as an unfortunate consequence of Insomniac's studio being cyber attacked. While it seems to be in striking distance of development, it still may be a few years out.

Rumors Suggest New Venom PS5 Game in Development

If true, it is likely the Venom game will serve as a sort of bridging point between the Spider-Man 2 and the future Spider-Man 3 game releases, in a similar vein to how Insomniac created Spider-Man: Miles Morales to be a bridging point between the prior Spider-Man titles.

Development Timeline and Possible Release
Early leaks indicated that the game would come out in 2025, but with 2025 nearly in the rear view mirror, we can come to the conclusion that the game has likely been pushed back for a few years. Recent reports reveal that Insomniac could have the option to suit their focus on the Wolverine project, which they could also be targeting for 2026, meaning the likely Venom release date is now 2027-2028.

While I'm sure there were some concerns from fans about this game possibly being cancelled, new information suggests that the developers felt the project very much still remains as an active development. But it is uncertain at what stage.

Tony Todd, the actor who voiced Venom for Spider-Man 2, made a claim that a lot of his recordings went unused for Spider- Man 2. It is not unreasonable to believe, based on that alone, a lot of that content (lines of dialogue) was used to save for the stand-alone title, and he elaborated that there were also unrecorded parts that could also expand on the content he voiced.

Also, when you combine that with the other multiple leaks, many thought the Venom spin-off was at least still getting progressed in some form or another behind the scenes. Eddie Brock as the Protagonist

If it is to be believed, Eddie Brock, who is the original symbiote host in the comics, will be the lead in the game. This will be his first official introduction into Insomniac's Spider-Man universe, and is rumored to have a character design more in the vein of his comic appearance (short blonde hair, muscular body, potential beard) than the live-action adaptations.

If the rumors end up true, Eddie's addition would enable Insomniac to explore the unique bond he shares with Peter Parker, which is something that has been in the comics for quite a while and is very enjoyable for readers. How Brock is utilized with the fan-favorite characters that Insomniac has set up in their narrative is still an open-ended question, and one we hope to see fulfilled.

Antagonists and Supporting Characters
The Venom spin-off is also rumored to include a number of prominent characters from the Spider-Man mythos. Cletus Kasady, whose addition was teased in the Spider-Man 2 side quest (that served as a precursor to the supposed Carnage fight as the second major fight), is expected to play the villain role. If this rumor ends up being true, this could lead to one of the most chaotic situations yet in Insomniac's Marvel Universe.

Additionally, Anti-Venom was supposedly included in the game. This build of Anti-Venom is supposed to be more aligned to the comic, monstrous style in comparison to the version which was briefly referenced in Spider-Man 2 (Wash Sue, which resembled a black-and-white symbiote suit). According to leaks, Eddie Brock will eventually get Anti-Venom and gain full control over its abilities.

Excitement and Skepticism
As with all unconfirmed speculation, there must be a level of skepticism. Development timelines can be ambiguous, and this includes storylines/directions. Nevertheless, a Venom-focused title sounds exciting, especially with the popularity of the character and the recent interest to exhibit darker or mature themes surrounding this iteration in Insomniac's Spider-Man Stories.

Fans are hopeful that the Venom game (should it make its way to production) doesn't just introduce Eddie Brock; they'll get to see much-anticipated fights against Carnage, and refuse to lay groundwork for Spider-Man 3. If the rumors are true, it could lead to an unbelievable development of Insomniac's Marvel Universe and a great twist into the world of symbiotes for players.
