Nintendo consoles have never been a main focus for Rockstar Games. Still, ports over the years have brought GTA 3, Vice City, San Andreas and even the original Red Dead Redemption to Nintendo hardware. GTA 4, GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 have stayed away, which is why so many people were excited about this project.
How the Port Fell Apart
The fan project made headlines earlier in September after its team got the game running natively on the original Switch. The plan was to bring it to Android devices too. Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games, stepped in soon after the news spread. The lead modder, Mojso, has now confirmed that the port is finished and will never be released to the public because of legal action from Take-Two.
That means both the Switch and Android versions are effectively dead. The team had kept working on the project and had even managed to get much of GTA Online running. Trouble began in mid-September, though. The modding team's Discord account was banned on September 23 for breaking rules on copyright infringement. Mojso announced the shutdown on September 28 and said the whole modding group would close on October 3.
There are also claims that the project relied on leaked source code for the game, which likely made matters worse. Mojso said he was thankful Take-Two showed "mercy" and has brushed aside commenters who tried to find a workaround. Other projects that tried to rebuild or port Rockstar assets, such as the effort to bring Liberty City into GTA 5, met the same end. Take-Two is well known for guarding its IP closely, so many people saw this outcome coming.
What It Means for Switch Owners
For now, Switch players will have to wait for more of the series. A developer recently said a GTA 6 port to Nintendo Switch 2 might be possible, but probably won't happen. Nothing has been announced about bringing GTA 4 or GTA 5 to the system either. PlayStation and Xbox remain the best places to play as many GTA games as possible, while PC gamers are still waiting to hear more about a GTA 6 port.
