What the Producer Said
Resident Evil has been on a roll despite a few rough patches in its history. The soft reboot with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was a huge success, and a steady run of remakes and new entries has kept the series fresh for newcomers and longtime fans alike. That stream may end sooner than some would like.
In an interview with a Japanese publication, executive producer Jun Takeuchi explained that the Resident Evil 2 remake kicked off a 10-year branding concept, and that the release of Resident Evil Requiem has closed out those ten years. He added that he thinks the story's conclusion will arrive within the next ten years. It's unclear whether that means the end of the whole franchise or just the end of the story for original characters like Leon, Claire, Jill and Chris. He did say the plan is to release multiple games over the next decade, but he couldn't say more without giving away spoilers.
What Fans Can Expect
The promise of multiple games matches earlier reveals and leaks. Capcom has said it wants to release a new Resident Evil game every year, including the upcoming Resident Evil Veronica. Rumors suggest Resident Evil Zero and the original game will be remade, and Resident Evil 5 and even 6 are possibilities, which could mean half of the coming decade is made up of remakes. Those rumors are best taken with a grain of salt until Capcom confirms or denies them.
Who Will Carry the Story?
Although new characters have appeared now and then, much of the series has followed the original cast. The Raccoon City outbreak happened back in 1998, so those characters are now considerably older, and another soft reboot with a new crew is possible. Then again, several of the originals have been infected with viruses and parasites that affect their aging, so some of them could plausibly stick around well into the future.
Fans may have to say goodbye to the Resident Evil they know, but a decade is a long time. If Capcom's plan goes smoothly, there will be plenty of new games to enjoy along the way, even if the original storyline concludes.
