Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection Gets Free Update With Cross-Play

The Mortal Kombat: Legacy Collection has received an impressive free update that adds many much-anticipated elements to this long-time favorite collection of games. The collection was created by Digital Eclipse (a retro game development specialist) and includes 23 titles across all platforms: arcade, console, and portable/handheld.

The games included are the mainline games as well as some alternate titles, such as Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces. In addition, this edition includes the rare WaveNet version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, the ancient limited arcade test release from 1997 that was thought to be lost.

All of the included titles have been upgraded with modern features such as online multiplayer and rollback netcode. Therefore, these titles can now be enjoyed by both die-hard fans of Mortal Kombat and newer players on current consoles.

New Features: Cross-Platform Play, VRR, and Online Modes
Of the new features included in this update, the most exciting is cross-platform play (called Krossplay to match the franchise's unique spelling), which is turned off by default but can be turned on via the Settings menu. Once enabled, players on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC will be able to play against each other using either the Quick Play or Online Arcade modes.

In addition, many of the most popular titles also include two-player online mode versions, which are clearly labeled in online rooms. The update added support for variable refresh rates on all compatible devices/platforms (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 in handheld mode, and PC).

According to Digital Eclipse, this feature will help synchronize displays to the irregular frame rates the original arcade versions of the games used, which should improve game graphics and reduce input lag for the player. Furthermore, new localization options and various small bug fixes were included in the update.

However, Mortal Kombat Trilogy is not compatible with Krossplay on the original Nintendo Switch due to technical limitations.

Final Major Update Coincides With The Release Of The Mortal Kombat 2 Movie
Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection's update coincides very well with the release of the Mortal Kombat 2 movie (it will hopefully be in theaters November 2023). The addition of cross-platform play should increase the online community around these classic games by allowing players from all supported platforms to connect.

Digital Eclipse has stated that it will continue to check and release bug fixes and small improvements for the collection, but this update is likely to be their last major update for the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection, and no new titles will be added to the collection.

However, the updates will provide fans with a lot of additional content to enjoy while they wait for NetherRealm Studios to release another major title. There are already rumors that the next major title may be Injustice 3 (as there have been leaks about this title being developed).
