Konami Announces Wai Wai World Craft Game

Konami has delighted fans by revealing Wai Wai World Craft, a series that reimagines one of the company's classic stories for today's games. Dubbed a "Social Game Creation Network," the new game provides players with the power to build, customize, and share their own games with others. Many outsiders may only have niche memories of the original Wai Wai World due to it being Japan-only in 1988, but this new project could give the series a new chance to foster an audience in modern gaming.

A Modern Version of a Classic Series
This announcement was included in Konami's 2025 Tokyo Game Show list of games that respond to the company's previously teased secret projects. Few would have anticipated that Watkins World would return, as it is one of the older and experimental concepts for Konami.

Wai Wai World Craft is a new way to introduce a game creation experience with social aspects. Players will create their own games based on published assets, or the AI called "MagicPod" will assist players in creating.

The series is intended to attract original players and will feature characters from Konami franchises, similar to the concept of the different characters from the original series.

Gameplay Features and Platforms
Based on the initial trailer, Wai Wai World Craft will contain a wide set of tools that have user-friendly editing aspects, map editing tools, and rules that can be created easily when selecting from gameplay options.

The game will include a social hub where users can display their projects, collaborate with friends, and engage in co-op gameplay with as many as eight players.

It is established that the game is free-to-play with optional microtransactions on Steam, iOS, and Android. However, there has not been a release date revealed. The social hub and creation system have already had many fans equate the experience to a Japanese version of Roblox.

For those who do not know, the original Wai Wai World was a Famicom game that was released in 1988. The game involved rescuing iconic Konami heroes, who became allies in the adventure.

The game had its share of creativity; however, it remained a Japan-only title and was overshadowed by Konami franchises like Castlevania and Contra.

This new project returns that feeling of crossover collaboration but presents the package differently: rather than having a linear experience, it allows fans to create and share experiences with one another.

One concern is that Wai Wai World Craft would simply become history as a Japan-only title. While Konami has promoted the project heavily on their Japanese social media presence, there has yet to be an official English-language announcement, which has some wondering if the game may remain exclusive to Japan.

Observers of the industry state that this would be the perfect time for a worldwide release. Roblox has faced particular scrutiny and regulatory pressure, and Konami might be able to fill that need by launching internationally.

Expanding the game outside of Japan could provide a new generation players exposure to the Wai Wai World name and position Konami with even more strength among user-generated experience platforms.
