The second beta weekend, running from August 13 through August 17, is open to all players and will also include both modes. Preloading is already underway on Xbox and PC, and fans have noticed that Versus and Horde Siege have been released as separate downloads. The Coalition communicated the change directly to the community, stating simply that they had heard the feedback and acted on it.
Why Versus Was Added Early and What It Includes
The decision to add Versus to the opening weekend beta followed a wave of complaints from the community, particularly from players who pointed out that pre-release preview coverage had already shown content creators playing PvP matches before the beta was even announced. When it became clear that early access would be limited to Horde Siege, many fans expressed frustration, with some saying their enthusiasm for the pre-order bonus had been significantly reduced. Others felt the scope of early access had not been clearly communicated in the marketing.
The Coalition's Versus mode for E-Day departs from the franchise's traditional 5v5 competitive format, opting instead for a 4v4 structure. Matches will feature equal starting loadouts for all players, Power Weapons on the map, and updated movement systems introduced specifically in this entry. The full game will include returning fan-favourite modes such as Team Deathmatch, Conquest, Demolition, and Crucible, a mode centred on a Power Core objective. No official map list or complete mode breakdown for the beta has been released at the time of the announcement, though the Versus client is already available to pre-download in preparation for the August 6 start date.
What Both Beta Weekends Offer and Why It Matters
Alongside Versus, both beta weekends will give players access to Horde Siege, a reimagined version of the franchise's beloved cooperative survival mode. Designed for 12 players split into three squads, Horde Siege takes place across larger environments than traditional Horde maps. The beta will feature the Golden Quarter map, four distinct classes, and a structure built around shifting objectives leading to a final battle and extraction sequence. PC players will also have the opportunity to test Nvidia's DLSS and Reflex settings during the beta period, with the full suite of PC features available when the game officially launches.
Having both Versus and Horde Siege available from the first weekend gives The Coalition a much broader dataset to work with ahead of October, covering multiplayer balancing, competitive movement feel, cooperative teamwork, matchmaking performance, and network stability across two very different modes. For fans, it means the beta is now a meaningful representation of the full game rather than a single-mode preview. Gears of War: E-Day is a prequel featuring Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago, two of the franchise's most beloved characters, and the studio's willingness to respond quickly to community feedback before the beta even begins suggests a team that is paying close attention to what its audience wants from the series' return.
