Chapter 7 Season 4, dubbed Override, leans heavily into video game crossover culture, introducing skins inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog, Tetris, and Pac-Man. The season also rolled out several new weapons tied to gaming history, including the Midas Masterpiece and the Mega Buster, with more crossover weapons still to come, such as the Kingdom Key from Kingdom Hearts and Rebecca's Guns from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. Despite the exciting additions, players quickly zeroed in on a less welcome discovery involving how lobbies are being filled.
Real Player Counts Reportedly Dropping Fast
Fortnite fan Au5la shared on social media data showing a significant rise in bot numbers since the beginning of the season. The numbers, taken from a Discord bot that logs player stats throughout seasons, indicated that actual player counts in past seasons were mostly between 58 and 65 per match. However, similar tracking since the launch of Chapter 7 Season 4 has shown real player counts dropping considerably, with some matches reportedly having as few as 25 human players out of a full 100-player lobby. Many players have said this change has hurt the overall experience, with some saying they don't start facing real opponents until the very late stages of a match.
This is not the first time bots have caused conversation in the community of Fortnite. "Many players have argued for a long time that playing against bots isn't the same as playing against real opponents, and some worry that newer players trying to get better could be hurt by games padded with lower-skill AI. For a long time, people have complained about the game's matchmaking system. Annoyed fans say that Epic Games should change its skill-based matchmaking, instead of adding bots to lobbies of players with lower skills.
New Season Mechanics Bring New Gameplay Twists
Aside from the bot debacle, Override has added a number of new gameplay mechanics that tie into its gaming crossover theme. There's an interesting addition in the form of the Tetris Rift, which allows players to summon Tetris-like blocks to use as cover, but then explode in an area-of-effect heal when they disappear. Rings with a Sonic motif have also been sprinkled around the new location, Green Hill Zone, and when picked up, they give players an Overshield. However, if you get hit by an enemy, the bonus shield and any rings you've collected disappear instantly.
Looking forward, Override still has plenty planned for the rest of the season. Players with sharp eyes have found a building under construction on the new map that looks very similar to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, causing speculation of a potential Five Nites at Freddy's crossover in the future. There's also a rumored Persona 5 collab coming in September that will feature a Joker skin, but might eventually add Ryuji and Ann as well. But despite the bot controversy, the override season of Fortnite seems to be off to a good start, with a lot more content coming to keep players engaged.
