Here's What We Know So Far
Treyarch announced the ports will be exclusive to PlayStation platforms, but it is unclear exactly which PlayStation consoles will support the ports. The leaked before-suggested games will probably be released on PS4, which means they will also be playable on PS5 via backwards compatibility. It is not yet confirmed if a native PS5 version will be released.
What Players Should Expect From the Ports
Treyarch also confirmed that the ports will feature the full experience from both games, including campaign, multiplayer, and the popular Zombies mode. This means players will not be getting a stripped-down version but the full package that comes with each title. There are still a lot of questions that remain, though. Can players carry over existing progress? Will there be cross-play with other versions of the games? Or will these new ports work completely independently of existing releases on other platforms?
No Word on Xbox, PC Versions Yet
Treyarch did not mention any equivalent upgrades or re-releases coming to Xbox or PC. This is largely because both games are already accessible on those platforms, and historically, Xbox has had more comprehensive backwards compatibility support than PlayStation. Sony's current consoles don't support PS3 titles natively, which is why there's a need for new ports on PlayStation specifically.
Why This Announcement Is Important
This news is a bit of a surprise, considering Call of Duty has mostly steered clear of re-releases of older titles in recent years. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare received a successful remaster in 2016, though it apparently stole the spotlight from Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare at the time. A remaster of the Modern Warfare 2 campaign came out in 2020 but was criticized by fans because it omitted the game's famous multiplayer mode entirely.
Why Activision Likely Avoided Remasters In Recent Years. Fans have theorized that Activision has steered clear of similar remaster projects in recent years for fear that such releases could pull players away from newer entries in the franchise. This is a significant change of approach from the publisher and will likely be welcomed by long-time fans of the series against this backdrop. The confirmation of full-featured ports for both Black Ops and Black Ops 2, with campaign, multiplayer, and Zombies content, is a significant change of approach for the publisher.
