As one of the most talked-about titles in 2023, the controversy surrounding the game's performance on the Nintendo Switch 2 only adds to the story.
In the Reign of Talon Season 2 patch, the Nintendo Switch 2 port of Overwatch was released alongside a limited-time meta event, a new playable character, and several balance changes. Grossly disappointing numbers in performance have plagued the game's performance on the Switch 2 ever since; in some instances, the performance of Overwatch on the Nintendo Switch 2 has actually been lower than it was on the original Switch model (30 fps).
In a post on the official Blizzard community forums, the developer confirmed that Overwatch is currently limited to a lower FPS cap than what was originally implemented on the Nintendo Switch 2, and they are currently working on a patch to resolve the issue, but no eta was provided. According to Blizzard, they also used this post to address multiple other bug reports from the community.
These issues included custom key bindings not saving, Mystery Heroes settings not updating properly, and various cosmetic-related bugs.
Many players are frustrated due in large part to the high expectations set by Blizzard for the Switch 2 version prior to the launch of the port. Blizzard promised that the Switch 2 version of Overwatch would have enhanced visual quality and audio performance with delivery of up to 60 FPS in both handheld and docked modes.
With these previous commitments from Blizzard, the disappointing performance of the launch occurs for many players as a substantial step backward, and some players feel as if the Switch 2 has performed nearly identically to the original Switch game.
Players are still continuing to enjoy all that Reign of Talon season 2 brought to the game despite the issues with performance. The 2nd Season of Reign of Talon introduced a new character to the roster, named Sierra. She is a DPS hero equipped with a powerful gun and has unique abilities that are expected to drastically change the meta of the game.
There are also post-match awards being given again for the second season, allowing players to recognize teammates for their exceptional contributions in such categories as MVP, sportsmanship, and total performance.
Additionally, there have been substantial improvements made to the Map Voting system on the competitive side of the game. Players now receive fewer rank penalties when losing a ranked match that was played on a new or recently reworked map, resulting in a much fairer experience for players who are not as familiar with the new layout of the map.
Also, players will be able to automatically select a map that received the majority of player votes to be played on the next game, and a new Random Map option has also been added, giving players many more options other than what is provided through the standard rotational maps.
While Blizzard has a performance patch underway, the community remains hopeful that the terms of agreement to provide a superior experience of playing Overwatch on Switch 2 will be fulfilled by Blizzard and provided to the community in the near future.
