Why Fans Are Watching This One
ArcheAge Chronicles has been called one of the most anticipated upcoming MMORPGs of 2026, and there are a couple of reasons why. It is a new entry in the beloved ArcheAge series, which had a great run in the early 2010s. It is also an ambitious project that aims to bring AAA-level visuals to massively multiplayer online games.
What the Demo Offers
Developer XL GAMES has confirmed that the game will take part in October's Steam Next Fest, with a free demo open to everyone. A network test was held on Steam in September, but it was very limited and missed key features such as PvP. This time, the demo will include PvP combat for the first time and give players much more time to explore the world.
Some important features are still missing, including housing and trading. The demo will cover select content from one of the game's early regions, known as Diamond Shores. Given the fantasy-driven open-world setting, there will likely be plenty of repeatable activities to keep players busy. And if it plays like September's test, players should be able to team up and tackle PvE or PvP combat together, as you'd expect from an MMO.
What Comes Next for the Franchise
Korean developer XL Games is also working on another MMORPG in the series. Called ArcheAge S: Strait of Freedom, it is planned for 2027 and will follow a path closer to the 2014 ArcheAge game. ArcheAge Chronicles, meanwhile, appears to be making its MMO side more accessible, leaning toward a third-person action RPG rather than a hardcore MMO.
The game plans to enter early access sometime in Q4 2026. Producer Ham Yongjin recently said, "We're working toward early access, and it's coming sooner than you might think." Over the coming months, it will be interesting to see whether ArcheAge Chronicles can win back the franchise's early glory and become a new MMORPG sensation, or end up sharing the gloomy fate of its predecessors.
