Sony May Be Opening the Door to Old Favorites
Sony has plenty of beloved properties, but many of PlayStation's best-known mascots from the past have faded from view. Jak and Daxter, once one of the biggest platformers on the PS2, hasn't had a new game since the Jak and Daxter Collection in 2012. Sly Cooper, Infamous and PaRappa the Rapper have also gone more than a decade without a release, as Sony and its studios moved on to other projects.
Now a report from a trusted Sony leaker claims the company is accepting pitches to revive some of those series. Earlier rumors said Ape Escape and Killzone could have revival projects in the works, with Sony licensing and publishing the games for new developers. Sly Cooper has now been added to the mix, and the claim is that Sony is weighing a large-scale revival of many older PS2 and PS3 era franchises. The first wave is reportedly set to arrive around the launch of the PlayStation 6.
How Long These Series Have Been Quiet
All of this is still rumor, but each revival would end a long stretch of silence. Ape Escape's last main-series game, Ape Escape 3, came out in 2005, and the most recent entry was PlayStation Move Ape Escape on the PS3 in 2010. Killzone hasn't had a new game since Killzone Shadow Fall, a PlayStation 4 launch title in 2013. Sly Cooper's story is similar. Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time arrived on the PS3 in 2013, alongside the mobile-exclusive spin-off Bentley's Hackpack.
Many of the revivals would probably be handled by different studios, since the original developers have moved on. Sucker Punch Productions, the team behind Sly Cooper, has largely shifted to Ghost of Tsushima and its sequel, Ghost of Yotei. Japan Studio, which made Ape Escape, was merged into Astro Bot developer Team Asobi in 2021. Guerrilla Games has found huge success with the open-world Horizon series, and both Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West were nominated for Game of the Year.
What Is Already on the Way
PlayStation has a busy early 2027 lined up. February brings God of War Laufey, the first time the series will feature a protagonist other than Kratos. Until Dawn 2 also launches in February, bringing a brand-new cast to the survival horror series after more than ten years. If the rumors hold up, PlayStation may soon be bringing back even more of its classic franchises.
