Final Fantasy Resonance – A First Of Its Kind
The biggest announcement from the showcase was Final Fantasy Resonance, a brand new game that will be the first time the HD-2D visual style has been used for the Final Fantasy franchise. The game is described as a celebration of classic and modern Final Fantasy with a strategic turn-based battle system with a modern twist. Chocobos, espers and airships will be returning, with legendary characters such as Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light appearing, much to the delight of fans. The title is named after the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, but has been heavily rebuilt as a full console-quality RPG, not just a simple port.

Final Fantasy Resonance will be released on October 22, 2026 on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S and PC on Steam and Microsoft Store. The standard edition will cost $49.99, the Digital Deluxe Edition with in-game items will be $59.99, and the Collector's Edition with an artbook, soundtrack and a Final Fantasy Trading Card Game promotional card will be $209.99.

Kingdom Hearts Collection and Kingdom Hearts 4.
The Kingdom Hearts Collection was also announced, combining the HD 1.5 and 2.5 ReMIX, HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue, and Kingdom Hearts III with its Re Mind DLC into a single package. All three compilations will be available natively on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S and PC for the first time. The collection drops on October 8, 2026 with pre-orders now open on all platforms.

The next mainline entry in the action role-playing series, Kingdom Hearts IV, also got a new trailer. The game follows main character Sora through the mysterious city of Quadratum as it introduces new characters and powers. It’s confirmed for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC, with more details to come at a later date.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World
The show also featured a brand new trailer for Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World. It boasts a cast of more than 500 new and returning monsters, and centers on dual protagonists Bianca and Nera as they seek to bring life back to the world of Witherwood. You do not have to have played any of the Dragon Quest Monsters games to enjoy the game. It’s set to be released on December 3, 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC. Pre-orders are now open on most platforms.

Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy XIV – Coming to Nintendo Switch 2
Critical success Final Fantasy XIV Online will be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026. There will be a month of early access before launch, to make sure the servers are stable and, most importantly, you will not need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription to play. Separately, outside of the Nintendo Direct presentation, Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2 HD Remaster will arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 as a digital-exclusive bundle on July 23, 2026 — the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy X's original Japanese release. A special anniversary logo was designed for the event by Tetsuya Nomura.

Square Enix’s Bigger Legacy and What This Means for Fans
The volume of these announcements is a testament to Square Enix’s continued dominance of the RPG space. Worldwide sales for the Final Fantasy series have exceeded 212 million units, Dragon Quest has surpassed 97 million units, and the Kingdom Hearts franchise has shipped over 39 million units across the globe. Square Enix was also ranked the number one publisher of the year by Metacritic in 2025. The company is on one of its most busy release schedules in recent memory, and now has several high-profile titles confirmed for release before the end of 2026.
