Insider Sources Point to Handheld ImprovementRumour has it that new information regarding PlayStation 6 may include a portable console coming to market. This information comes from KeplerL2, a well-known insider to the video game industry, who shared information on NeoGAF Forums regarding this device possibly having greater capabilities than Xbox Series S (e.g., in terms of graphical processing units). Based on this, the handheld PS6 is supposedly going to provide slightly better raw graphical power than the Xbox Series S and massively exceed it with ray tracing and path tracing capabilities.
Another area of focus is the improvements made to the PlayStation's PSSR technology, which is designed to improve graphics through upscaling technology. This new updated version of this technology should exceed Nvidia's DLSS 4.5 (the leading technology today); whereas, the Nintendo Switch 2 is reportedly going to use technology closer to DLSS 2 technology. Therefore, there will most likely be a significant gap between the capabilities of the new PlayStation 6 handheld and the soon-to-be-released Nintendo Switch 2.
Return of Handhelds for Sony
For many months, speculation has grown surrounding the possibility of Sony returning to the portable gaming platform with the PlayStation 6. Currently, the PlayStation Portal gaming system allows players to stream and use Remote Play from their PlayStation 5 consoles; however, the upcoming portable gaming console will provide players with everything they would need in a stand-alone home console version of the PlayStation 6.
If true, this will be the first time since the PlayStation Vita was released in Japan for use on December 17, 2011, and then world-wide on February 22, 2012, that a true handheld gaming system will be available from Sony. Although many gamers came to appreciate the PlayStation Vita over time due to its exceptional game library, it was ultimately discontinued due to its lack of sufficient sales.
Pricing Information and Effects on Market
Due to the rising costs of production, the price of the current PlayStation 5 consoles has increased; therefore, this increase could create entry-level pricing for gamers interested in moving into the next generation of games with the portable version of the PlayStation 6. Although there is speculation, pricing on either the actual PlayStation 6, or even the portable PlayStation 6, is still uncertain. Current speculation from analysts state that the price of either device may exceed $1,000; therefore, the price of both devices may exceed $1,000.
Advancements in technology means that, when it is released, the portable console will be able to deliver the most power that has ever been available in a portable gaming device. Even if the graphics of the portable PS6 may not be identical to the graphics of the home version of the PS6 console, the project will still warrant the attention of many gamers who are currently searching for both portability and an attractive entry-level price as compared to traditional home console prices.
Rumours surrounding the PlayStation 6 continue to circulate at this time; however, in the future, if the specifications that have been rumoured to date turn out to be true, Sony's latest portable gaming system will most likely greatly influence how the gaming world views future portable gaming systems.
