What They Say Happened
The video, shared on Instagram by an account called Boostersandbangers, showed two young boys approaching a card vendor at the show to trade a bunch of cards for cash and a rare Gengar card worth around 150 US dollars. Shortly after getting the Gengar, the children returned to the same vendor empty-handed and told him that they traded the Gengar to Jason Paige in exchange for a signed card from the musician. The vendor was visibly shocked when told the signed card they had been given was apparently fake, and the situation quickly became distressing for the children. One of the boys described the item as a fake, graded signed card, while the vendor described Paige as "a con artist". The boys said they were confused and upset. One said Paige told them the trade would be a better deal for them.
Community Response
The video was met with online backlash from the Pokémon community almost instantly. Viewers took to the comments section to share their dismay and disbelief, with many users calling the alleged incident disheartening, insane, and deeply sad. Many fans turned to tagging Paige's social media accounts directly, demanding a response, while others turned their concern to the children to see if they managed to get their original Gengar card back. Paige's social media pages were then inundated with comments asking him to return the card to the boys.
Boosters and Bangers Explains the Situation
In a follow-up video on YouTube, Boostersandbangers detailed the incident, saying it was an injustice and that there was no real footage of the trade between Paige and the kids. He said he was giving the boys' account the benefit of the doubt, but it seemed like a scam to him. "I was glad to give it to one of the boys, and I was really upset when I heard it was allegedly taken from me by deception," he said. The vendor also mentioned that he was contacted by someone who claimed to be Paige's manager, who allegedly threatened him with a defamation lawsuit over the video. He also said the manager could have been at Paige's vendor table and could have been involved in facilitating the trade.
A Call for Responsibility
So his next video was urging Paige to come forward and address the situation publicly despite the threats of legal action from Boostersandbangers. He advised Paige could resolve the issue if he admitted the incident, blamed his manager if it was appropriate, and made it clear that the behaviour was not representative of his values. He also said Paige's team had indicated they would not be attending any further events with Boostersandbangers in attendance. In his commentary, the vendor was careful to note that what he had seen and heard was alleged, saying that he was working from what he had been told and witnessed, not from any footage of the trade itself. To date, Paige has not responded publicly to the incident, as far as this reporting.
