Larian Studios was lauded for creating a Dungeons & Dragons-based epic fantasy role-playing game that vaulted them into worldwide prominence when it was released in 2023; as a result, they received numerous awards and prestigious nominations, topped off by winning Game of the Year at the Game Awards.
Being so successful has opened Larian Studios to public scrutiny about their position concerning artificial intelligence and how it is perceived in the gaming world.
Generative AI has become one of the hottest topics in the game industry today. There has been a great deal of discussion about how game development companies can use or have already started using Generative AI technology in their development processes. There have been many concerns raised, especially by artists, about job security and how it would ultimately diminish the creative quality of video games.
The comments that Larian Studios made regarding their use of AI generated a huge response from gamers, which led to Larian Studios' official statement from their CEO, Swen Vincke, indicating that Larian Studios also plans on hosting an AMA-style (Ask Me Anything) session to address these comments directly. In his statement on his official X account, Vincke stated that the philosophy of Larian Studios is that gameplay should be in the hands of the developers and the gamers, and Vincke feels it would be irresponsible to ignore new technologies completely. Larian Studios has announced a Q&A that fans will be able to take part in, with a possibility of being able to ask questions/talk to each individual department at the studio about how they will be utilizing (or, perhaps, not utilizing) AI in their future projects. However, no specific date has been set, but it should take place sometime after the Holidays.
Just after the announcement of their newest game studio, Larian Studios made an announcement surrounding the controversy related to the new Divinity project they are developing. During the 2025 Game Awards, we found out that there was going to be a brand new Divinity game, marking a return to their original franchise after working with Wizards of the Coast on the Baldur's Gate series. While many fans were ecstatic, there was some negative feedback from fans regarding the divinity concept artwork being generated using AI. Vincke later went on record saying that this misunderstanding regarding the Studio's intentions is a big part of the rationale behind the Q&A session.
The success of Baldur's Gate 3 was a very large factor in allowing Larian Studios to return to Divinity. Upon its launch, Baldur's Gate 3 received multiple free updates, including new subclasses, an extended epilogue, more difficult modes, A mod-supporting platform, Expanded Ending Options for dark playthroughs etc. Because of these updates and word-of-mouth about the game, more than 20 million copies of Baldur's Gate 3 have been sold in less than 2 yrs. Because of the new announcement around Divinity, the activity levels in Divinity: Original Sin and Divinity: Original Sin 2 have dramatically increased.
The Q&A session is Larian Studios' way to deliver clarity, build momentum towards their next Divinity game, and address the concerns that players have about the Studio's stance on generative AI. The studio has said that the new Divinity game will be larger and more elaborate than Baldur's Gate 3, and all eyes are on Larian Studios as they look to advance forward with their next project while continuing to keep the trust of their fan base.
