Like previous entries in the franchise, Black Ops 7 will launch with multiple multiplayer maps and modes, along with a new campaign and Zombies modes. Multiplayer remains the biggest draw for many fans, and following the open beta in early October, Treyarch confirmed to fans that matchmaking at launch would largely be with minimal skill restrictions. Following on from that, the studio has gone on to further clarify how that will work when the game arrives.

What is Open and Skill-Based Matchmaking?
In Treyarch's latest update, the developer notes that the majority of playlists will retain and use the Open matchmaking style, which means minimum skill would affect players' lobby formation. This system will work similarly to the beta test for the open beta. However, there will be one exception, a rotating Moshpit playlist in which matchmaking wouldobviously use more skill depending on the lobby formation.

Ranked Play would also be included, which would establish a more classic skill-based approach to ensure a more skilled match-up against other players. To simply things down, all playlists will be labelled as which type of matchmaking it use on the lobby matchmaking label, allowing players to observe if the mode would be relaxed or competitive.

Persistent lobbies will return to multiplayer to keep players clustered in the usually same lobby before and between matches, and works on a ranking system.

Community Reaction and Future Adjustments
Some welcomed the return of a primarily open matchmaking system, while others showed concern that skill would greatly impact matchmaking in the competitive playlist. Some feel its the start of a slippery slope leading to a limited skill matchmaking system.

With release just around the corner, the community will be able to experience the matchmaking systems across the range of maps and modes in a matter of days. After launch, Treyarch has mentioned that there would be post launch content, including returning maps such as Nuketown, so the experience of Black Ops 7 will evolve further in the coming months.
