Surprise Update from Mario Kart World
Mario Kart World is already being adjusted before it even receives the official green light. Nintendo has released version 1.1.0 of the game in preparation for its grand arrival alongside the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5. A few fortunate early birds who somehow got the console and game early have already started downloading the update— and the update is packed with a boatload of great stuff.

What Does the 1.1.0 Update Include?
Here's what's new:

1. Support for Nintendo Switch 2's camera feature
2. Official introduction to online multiplayer
3. Ability to activate LAN play directly from the title screen
4. Free Roam mode now shows icons of nearby players, making the game even more interactive
5. Ability to upload and download 'ghost data' in Time Attack
6. Improved performance for more than three players in local multiplayer and a smoother experience in "Everyone" mode
7. Removed the timer for course selection in LAN and local play, taking the pressure off when choosing tracks

Free Roam is Now More Social
Free Roam Mario Karts World's Free Roam mode has always been a hit, but now every change is even more fun. While racing, players can also view other racers nearby on the map this will allow for an even more realistic open-world racing experience.

Early Unlock for Additional Characters
Another unexpected surprise of the update – players will now get more characters right from the beginning. Nintendo hasn't exposed the entire list but it's clear there will be more variety than ever.

Online Play Confirmed
Quite a few folks were surprised there was no online mode announced right off, but it should be obvious now that it's part of the update which has already gone live. Whether you play with friends or off against others over the Internet, it is available to you from day one.

Why A Pre-Launch Update?
It's odd to push out an update before a game comes out, but it does give the impression that Nintendo isn't taking anything for granted here and really has worked hard to deliver a polished experience this time around. Releasing on the same day as the Switch 2 and Mario Kart World on June 5, 2025, this update is a great way to get the game's launch day off on the right foot.

What's Next?
With this information, we have some missing puzzle pieces, but the gaming community is already buzzing with theories for updates to come. There are some rumours that bigger displacement engine options like 300cc can also be included in the near future too.

The Bottom Line
Players can expect a mature and feature-rich Mario Kart World right from the start. It is going to be interesting and exciting to watch in which direction Nintendo steers this racing adventure next.
