Red Dead Redemption 2 Mod Replaces Sled Dogs With Jack Marston

Red Dead Redemption 2 modder Blurbs has done it again, swapping sled dogs for multiple copies of child character Jack Marston to pull Arthur Morgan's boat across the ground in another ridiculously creative and comedic mod to Rockstar's beloved open-world western. This latest creation is just the newest of many strange and entertaining experiments from a modder who has developed a cult following thanks to his consistently imaginative and often absurd changes to one of gaming's most celebrated open-world titles.

The Genesis of the Idea
This mod was not a conscious effort to use Jack Marston as a beast of burden. The session began with Blurbs trying out some strange forms of transport by tying a string of horses and other animals to a boat in which Arthur sat. As Blurbs thought about how to speed up the setup, he asked out loud what the fastest land animal might be, prompting a live audience viewer to suggest using Jack Marston, the young son of protagonist John Marston. It made Blurbs laugh out loud, but the modder decided to give it a shot anyway, spawning multiple instances of Jack and putting them to work as a makeshift sled team with genuinely hilarious results.

What happened then?
Half a dozen Jack Marstons were running ahead of him, dragging the boat over the ground. Arthur sat in his boat and slid over the ground in a ridiculous fashion. The chaos escalated when one of the Jacks was jammed on the front of the boat, and the child was doing somersaults in a continuous loop beside Arthur, with the other Jacks still pulling the whole rig forward. The blurbs laughed for a moment at the mayhem unfolding, then moved on to other experiments, but Jack's part in the session was far from over.

Arthur the Snowboarder and Jack the Board
In the same session, Blurbs did a bunch of other mod experiments, including one that gave Arthur the ability to fly, before landing on the idea of turning Arthur into a snowboarder. The modder had somehow rigged up a board that Arthur could actually stand on, and the outlaw would slide down a snowy hillside and do jumps and tricks in a row, which was pretty funny. When that idea had played out, Blurbs swapped the snowboard out for the very Jack Marston himself, strapping the child to Arthur's feet and sending him down the hill in the board's place. Blurbs at this point recognized that the mod was starting to straddle the line between whimsy and real darkness, but the comedic tone of the whole session kept it firmly in the realm of absurdist entertainment.

Not the First Time Jack Has Needed a Rescue
This isn't the first time Blurbs has taken creative license with the characterization of young Jack Marston. In a previous mod that made quite a splash in the Red Dead Redemption 2 community, Blurbs turned Jack into a throwable tomahawk for Arthur to use as a weapon. The results were widely described as hilarious, with Jack successfully taking out multiple opponents before getting stuck in a tree and ragdolling to the ground in spectacular fashion. Blurbs also had a great effect by making every NPC in the game very drunk, leading to chaos everywhere, with characters staggering through cutscenes and falling off cliffs. Jack, too, starred in that experiment, with a short clip of him staggering around and then falling face-first on a fishing trip.

A Heritage of Creative Modding
Blurbs has established himself as one of the more inventive and entertaining modders working with Red Dead Redemption 2, with a portfolio that includes turning the game into a Mortal Kombat-style experience and a wide range of other creative alterations that push the boundaries of what the game's engine was ever intended to do. Red Dead Redemption 2 is just the latest in a long line of open-world games that modders flock to for the creative potential of the expansive and flexible game worlds, including the Elder Scrolls series, Fallout, and Grand Theft Auto 5. With an active live audience constantly throwing out suggestions and an apparently insatiable appetite for the bizarre, it's only a matter of time before Blurbs comes up with the next unlikely use for Jack Marston or any other part of the Red Dead Redemption 2 universe.
