In addition, Sony has communicated via email directly to PlayStation users that if they do not verify their ages (or do not complete the process), they will lose access to voice chat and messaging on their PlayStation consoles. This places Sony among many other gaming companies and platforms that are currently navigating their way through the increasingly complex world of digital age verification laws.
Announcement Details
Sony Interactive Entertainment has communicated this change to PlayStation users in an email sent to select users, indicating that the rollout of age verification will begin sometime in 2026, but without giving a specific start or finish date.
The expected timeframe for completing the age verification is short (3 to 5 minutes for each user), and Sony has encouraged interested users to complete the age verification process now, rather than waiting until 2026, so that they will continue to have access to voice and text communications without interruption after age verification becomes mandatory for all users.
The age verification requirement is limited to voice and text communication tools (e.g., PSN messaging and voice chat) and does not affect the overall PlayStation Network experience.
Impacted Features
Although age verification will be required, the specific features that require users to verify their age have been well defined by Sony. Sega announced today that users will be restricted in their ability to use voice chat and messaging on PlayStation if they do not complete the age verification process. However, Sony stated that access to the PlayStation Store, trophy tracking, and the ability to play games will not be locked, so those services remain unaffected at this time.
Considering the relatively narrow scope of the restriction, it appears that Sony is attempting to balance its obligations to satisfy new age verification regulations while also minimizing disruptions for the gaming audience as a whole.
Where are the People Who Have Received the Emails?
According to a thread about this on ResetEra's gaming forum, most people who have received Sony's age verification email are from the UK and Ireland, and thus it is not surprising to see, since the UK has already enacted and enforced age verification regulations, and other gaming/online platforms have begun to follow with similar measures in the UK and Ireland.
Many of the users that have posted in the thread also compared the age verification measures used by Xbox to those being rolled out in the same countries late in 2025, but there has not yet been any word on how many other countries/regions will be included in Sony's overall rollout, or on whether or not a complete list of countries/regions has been published.
What is Driving These Changes?
The age verification process implemented by Sony is not implemented on its own. Governments and regulatory bodies worldwide are stepping up their efforts in the area of digital privacy, as well as enhancing consumer protection policies by introducing laws that improve access control to online features and services.
In California, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into state law the Digital Age Assurance Act ("D/AA"), more popularly referred to as California Assembly Bill 1043, in late 2025, requiring all devices with an operating system to assess user ages upon account creation.
The geographic scope of California Assembly Bill 1043 is broad and applies to all internet-enabled devices, thereby requiring Sony to implement an age-verification component in all internet-enabled PlayStation consoles. Once signed into law, California Assembly Bill 1043 will take effect on January 1, 2027.
Timing of Other Platforms' Age Verification Efforts
PlayStation's adoption of an age-verification process demonstrates the gaming and entertainment industries' response to regulatory pressure. Other platforms, such as Steam, have previously developed age-verification processes that comply with local laws (e.g., the United Kingdom) and non-local laws (i.e., U.S.). Similarly, Xbox has also implemented an age-verification process in the United Kingdom and Ireland.
As a result, several companies have begun employing age-verification processes and developing widespread acceptance of age-verification requirements; however, age-verification processes continue to have challenges associated with the rollout of those programs.
To help eliminate user dissatisfaction with age verification, Sony portrays the rollout of its age-verification process as an easy-to-implement one-time user experience in order to alleviate some of the negative publicity directed at other companies.
Controversy Surrounding Age Verification
Overall, the evolving dialogue between users regarding age verification (both inside and outside of gaming) continues to be contentious.
For example, in early 2026, Discord users responded to Discord's announcement that it would implement age verification throughout its platform with threats to leave or remove their subscriptions to Discord Nitro. Discord has announced that it will delay the rollout of its age-verification process and be more open with users about the rollout, further demonstrating user apprehension about requirements perceived as intrusive and/or questionable in relation to data privacy and personal information.
Prior Examples of Complications Associated with Age Verification
Many third-party platforms have faced their own issues related to the age-verification rollout. In particular, the Roblox user base expressed outrage due to the deletion of their chat history associated with their age-verification process, lending credence to the concern of age expectation among their user base, while at the same time illuminating the users' philosophical objections relating to privacy.
As Sony circulates its rollout plan, it should study the age-verification challenges faced by those that are at an advanced level of age verification implementation and that have already been reported in the market.
Given the widespread criticism regarding age-verification laws and the difficulties experienced during the implementation process, companies and governments will pay close attention to how Sony manages its age-verification communication and implementation, while the gaming community will be tracking the success or lack thereof of Sony's implementation and how similar efforts will be managed by other companies in the future.
