A Rough Few Days for the Franchise
November 7 is a big day for Mass Effect fans because the date echoes the in-game N7 military designation. Many expected news about the franchise's future in a matter of weeks. Instead, they were blindsided when EA announced that, amid wider restructuring, it was closing BioWare entirely and canceling the next entry in the series.
The New Figures
Shortly after that bad news, three new Mass Effect figures were teased. They continue the existing Youtooz line, which has already covered characters like Garrus, Tali, Wrex and more. Only silhouettes have been shown so far, but they appear to be Mordin, Joker and Liara. Youtooz also seemed to mourn the cancelation of Mass Effect Universe and the studio's shutdown, posting a line from the games: "I wish I had more time to study all of this..." along with a sad face. No release date has been announced, but more will likely be revealed on N7 Day, just five days after the social media announcement.
Fans Refuse to Give Up
Some fans will be happy just to get a figure of a favorite character, but the community isn't done fighting. A petition urging EA to reverse course and save Mass Effect Universe has collected nearly 300,000 signatures. Some gamers even put the Save Mass Effect campaign on a billboard in New York City's Times Square. Sadly, it seems unlikely at best that EA will change its mind.
There are still some bright spots. Fan modders are bringing multiplayer to Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, and the same team restored the Pinnacle Station DLC that was left out of that collection. Whether anything official appears on November 7 remains to be seen.
The loss of BioWare and Mass Effect Universe is the latest in a long line of studio closures and cancellations. Both successful and struggling studios have been shut down this year, including some under Ubisoft, Sony and Microsoft. AI development tools have likely sped up job losses too. It is a rough time for the industry and for gamers.
