This is the first new car drop for the game in over two months, which is one of the longest stretches of time that players have had to wait. The last major update came in the form of version 1.70, released on June 11, and it was heavy on endurance racing. It added five new vehicles: the BMW M Hybrid V8 '25, Ferrari 499P '23, Peugeot 9X8 '25, Porsche 963 '24, and the Porsche 911 Turbo S Safety Car. Those additions added new World Circuits races, an Extra Menu and further Scapes locations. July came and went without a similar update, so when series creator Kazunori Yamauchi dropped his latest teaser, fans noticed right away.
Yamauchi Hints at Four Niche Vehicles
Yamauchi broke the news himself on August 9 through a social media post, describing the incoming cars as somewhat "niche" and suggesting the update would arrive sometime the following week. As is typical with these teasers, he kept most details under wraps, showing only vague silhouettes and letting the community do the guesswork.
Speculation has since taken off across Gran Turismo forums and fan sites, with many predicting the lineup includes the Toyota Chaser Tourer V, Toyota Mark 2 Tourer V, Hyundai IONIQ 6 N, and Caterham Seven Superlight R500. None of these have been officially verified by Polyphony Digital just yet, so there's still a chance the final reveal looks different from what fans expect.
What These Rumored Cars Could Mean for the Roster
Should the community's predictions turn out to be correct, the two Toyota models would mark the return of two long-time fan favorites. Both the Chaser Tourer V and Mark 2 Tourer V are celebrated for their rear-wheel-drive setups and turbocharged 1JZ engines, and they've earned a strong following within drifting communities over the years. The Chaser even has a bit of pop culture history behind it, with a 1998 JZX100 version making an appearance in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Given their long-standing ties to the Gran Turismo franchise, their potential comeback would likely excite a lot of veteran players.
The other two rumored additions, the Hyundai IONIQ 6 N and Caterham Seven Superlight R500, would add even more range to the update. The IONIQ 6 N represents Hyundai's foray into high-performance EVs, while the Caterham sits on the opposite end entirely, delivering a bare-bones, old-school driving feel. It's worth noting that Caterham hasn't shown up in the series since the Seven Fireblade appeared in Gran Turismo 6 back in 2013, meaning this would be the brand's first return in over a decade. Paired with two '90s-era Japanese sedans, this rumored mix fits well with Yamauchi's description of a more unconventional, niche-focused update.
For now, there's no confirmation on whether the August update will include anything beyond the four cars, such as new races, Café content, engine swap options, or additional Scapes environments. Those specifics usually get revealed closer to launch, so this teaser is likely just the opening piece of a bigger announcement. With the update now locked in for August, players shouldn't have to wait much longer to find out exactly what's heading into their garages.
