Ubisoft has quietly released Ghost Recon: Wildlands Definitive Edition on PS5 and Xbox Series X, bringing one of the studio's most enduring open-world shooters back into the spotlight nearly ten years after it first launched. The original Ghost Recon: Wildlands arrived on March 7, 2017, and has maintained a remarkably loyal player base ever since, continuing to outperform some newer entries in the franchise despite its age. The Definitive Edition, which went live on official store pages on July 6, 2026, bundles together the full original game alongsideWildlands was a significant departure for the Ghost Recon series when it was originally released, placing players inside a fictional open-world Bolivia overrun by the Santa Blanca cartel. The game offered a much greater degree of freedom than earlier entries in the franchise and placed strong emphasis on four-player co-op, allowing squads to approach missions in a variety of ways.
It received two major expansions in Narco Road and Fallen Ghosts, a Ghost War player-versus-player mode, and two full years of post-launch support. Even after Ghost Recon: Breakpoint arrived in 2019, many players continued returning to Wildlands for its grounded setting, flexible structure, and authentic cartel conflict rather than its successor's more divisive sci-fi direction.
What the Definitive Edition Includes and What Is Coming
The Ghost Recon: Wildlands Definitive Edition packages the Season Pass, Year 2 Pass, Narco Road, Fallen Ghosts, the Quick Start Pack, and the Deluxe Pack into a single purchase. Two additional content packs, Nightfall Protocol and Cold Eye, are also included and are scheduled to become available in-game this August. Nightfall Protocol adds four characters, seven accessories, two parachutes, and four weapons, while Cold Eye delivers four characters, three accessories, one parachute, and four more weapons. These are presented as equipment and character packs on the official store pages rather than any kind of new story content.
It is worth noting that the Definitive Edition currently appears on the PlayStation Store as a PS4 version playable through backward compatibility rather than a dedicated native PS5 release. The same basic structure applies across platforms for now, meaning the upgrade in terms of technical performance remains to be formally confirmed.
Rumoured Upgrades and What Could Be Coming in August
The Definitive Edition's arrival is only part of the story circulating around Ghost Recon: Wildlands right now. Promotional images surfacing on the Xbox game hub appear to be advertising a considerably more significant set of updates planned for early August, including 4K resolution support, 60 frames per second gameplay, and an entirely new story mission referred to as Last Rites. None of these upgrades have been officially confirmed by Ubisoft at the time of writing, and they are not mentioned in any of the current store descriptions. A previous adjustment to the PlayStation Store had already fuelled speculation about a native current-gen version of the game, but official communication from Ubisoft has not addressed this directly.
If 4K and 60 FPS support does arrive, it would be a genuinely meaningful improvement for a game originally designed around the limitations of PS4 and Xbox One hardware. Better resolution, smoother frame rates, faster loading times, and improved visual clarity across Bolivia's open world would give both returning and new players a noticeably different experience. A brand-new story mission arriving nine years after launch would be an even more unusual move and would give lapsed players a specific reason to return.
The timing of all of this has also prompted broader speculation that Ubisoft may be looking to build renewed interest in the Ghost Recon franchise ahead of announcing its next major installment, particularly as the studio has confirmed its main release schedule is relatively quiet for the remainder of this year. An official announcement from Ubisoft covering the August updates is expected in the near future as the planned DLC release window draws closer.
