As the first installment in 2K's beloved first-person shooter series, BioShock introduced players to Rapture, a haunting underwater city populated by strange and terrifying creatures. The game quickly earned a reputation for hooking players almost instantly, with its opening minutes often cited as some of the most memorable in the genre. Both BioShock and its follow-up, BioShock 2, later received the remaster treatment through BioShock: The Collection, which arrived on PC, Xbox One, and PS4 in September 2016.
A Two-Dollar Find With a Rare Label
While bargain hunters know that thrift stores can occasionally turn up gaming treasures, one collector says they found something special in an even less expected location. Posting on the BioShock subreddit, a user going by No_Distance_3320 shared a photo of a sealed PC copy of the game, claiming they picked it up for just $2 inside an Amazon returns bin store. The copy remained fully wrapped in its original shrink wrap, showing only minor scuffs on the outer packaging.
What really caught attention, though, was the Games for Windows label printed on the box, a branding style that hasn't been used in more than ten years. Microsoft originally rolled out the Games for Windows label between 2006 and 2013, launching it alongside Windows Vista. The branding served two purposes at the time: it aimed to give Steam some competition while also signaling to buyers that certain Xbox 360 accessories would work seamlessly with PC titles carrying the label.
A Piece of Gaming History Frozen in Time
Though the Games for Windows brand was everywhere during the late 2000s and early 2010s, it eventually faded out, replaced by what is now the modern Microsoft Store and Xbox branding system. Some Reddit users chimed in to note that certain Games for Windows titles have become unplayable over time, since their digital rights management systems can no longer be activated. Still, that issue won't be a concern for the original poster, who said they have no intention of ever breaking the seal on their $2 discovery.
As for the franchise itself, fans haven't seen a new mainline BioShock game since BioShock Infinite was released in 2013. BioShock 4 development has reportedly had a rocky path, though 2K boss Strauss Zelnick gave a more positive outlook on the project in an interview in May 2026. BioShock 4 is still in active development, as far as we know, but 2K hasn't confirmed this, and longtime fans are still waiting to hear something concrete.
Meanwhile, the original BioShock is still getting love from its dedicated fanbase. More than fifteen years after its original release, a VR mod has just been released that allows players to step into Rapture with supported headsets, including motion controls that let them look around and aim freely.
