Blizzard is Helping Create the Stunning Fable CinematicsMatt Booty, Xbox's Chief Content Officer, said Blizzard's cinematics team is working with Playground Games to put together high-quality storytelling moments for the Fable Reboot. During a recent interview, Booty said Xbox is promoting collaboration between its studios in order to help them utilize each other's strengths.
Booty gave two examples (Compulsion Games using the Activision motion capture studio in Montreal and Rare is helping Double Fine with their Kiln pottery-themed video game with skills learned from Sea of Thieves) to show how by working together, Xbox is improving the quality of each of their titles.
On the surface, it may seem weird that Blizzard is working on Fable since they have so much to keep them busy with titles like Diablo 4, Overwatch, and World of Warcraft.Blizzard has long been recognized as a developer that creates (or "brings to life") impressive visual experiences in their games and thus would be a natural fit to help support Playground Games in an area where the studio does not have as much experience.
The Fable franchise will be entering its next evolution with the new Fable. This is the first new game in the Fable franchise since 2012. Prior entries in this franchise were developed by Lionhead Studios; the final title produced by Lionhead was Fable: The Journey, which was also the last game produced by that studio before shutting down. The reboot of Fable will be developed by Playground Games, who is primarily known for developing games in the Forza Horizon series. The decision to have Playground Games develop this new Fable game represents a fundamental change in the direction of the franchise, while still trying to maintain the core identity of Fable.
To kick off 2026, Playground Games released a gameplay trailer confirming that Fable is still on schedule to be released later this year. The gameplay trailer gave players their first look into the tone, world, and mechanics of the upcoming Fable, confirming for fans that Fable is still in development.
Although there is a lot of excitement surrounding the reboot of Fable, the upcoming game is not without its share of controversy. Reports indicate that some tried-and-true gameplay mechanics will be excluded from or altered in the upcoming game. Rumors have circulated that the game will not support co-op gameplay, which has been a feature of all previous titles in the franchise. Furthermore, the morphing system, which allowed a character to dramatically alter their physical appearance based on player-selected outcomes, may not exist in the same form or entirely in the new title.
Potential changes to the upcoming Fable reboot have triggered discussions among fans who want the game to stay in line with the original! With the involvement of Blizzard, we will see some amazing high-quality cutscenes and dramatic storytelling definitely enhancing the immersion of this RPG experience... And we expect Fable will have countless memorable moments due to Blizzard's experience!
Release plans are still in flux because there is no definitive release date yet however; we anticipate Fall 2026 as the release date. Some rumors have surfaced about a possible release delay into 2027 due to GTA 6 having some heavy competition in that same time frame. Fans became aware of this speculation and so did Playground Games and have publicly stated they still remain on track for a 2026 release.
Even though this statement by Playground Games has calmed the fear levels some fans have of very over three years since the release of the last mainline Fable game; many are staying cautious, especially due to the complexities of modern game development.
Microsoft wants to make something special with this long term franchise return to classic gaming. A project of this magnitude after manny years creating something exclusive will take significant investment! With Blizzard involved, we all know Microsoft is taking Fable seriously!
In the coming months leading up to Fable's release we expect to see a lot more information on gameplay, features and all other things related to final design/concept before launch! From Playground Games hope, we will see the Fable reboot be a polished product with all the right elements to create an enjoyable experience from two great companies doing what they know best!
At the end of the day, most fans believe if done correctly this could be a continuation of the legacy set forth from Fable and yet offer up some totally new concepts within the game. The Fable reboot after more than ten years since Fable III will be much more than simply a new game - it represents a pivotal moment for the future of the entire franchise!
