Since It Takes Two was released, other cat-focused games have been doing well, Stray being a notable example of mixing cyberpunk visuals with third-person adventure gameplay focused on its cat protagonist. While there have been many cat-themed games before and after Stray, few have given the same cooperative two-player experience that made It Takes Two so beloved.
The Missing Tail Pairs Two Very Different Cats Together
It Takes Two style of gameplay that saw it become a hit. The newly announced co-op game has obvious similarities to the The Missing Tail is the story of Pepper, a pampered royal palace cat who has accidentally run away from home, and Dash, a street-smart stray cat who is used to looking after himself. The two must work together to get back to where they belong. One early trailer showcases gameplay within a medieval fantasy setting, highlighting co-op features such as carrying a torch together, moving objects to assist each other in reaching new areas, and even being magically shrunk down by a wizard to slip through a keyhole.
Estoty, the developer, is just like Stray in that they don't mind the playful chaos that cats are known for. There is still a lot of focus on teamwork and moving through the story but there are still plenty of opportunities for mischief such as knocking items off shelves. It probably won't go as far as games like Catlateral Damage, where the idea is to wreak havoc, but players should still find plenty of fun moments causing trouble for human NPCs along the way.
A Splitscreen Co-op Experience Coming to Multiple Platforms
Fans of local co-op gaming will be pleased to know The Missing Tail supports splitscreen play, allowing two players to enjoy the game together using just a single copy. A specific release date hasn't been announced yet, but the game is already available to wishlist on PlayStation and Steam, with an Xbox listing expected soon. Players interested in trying the game early can also sign up through the official website to join the playtest waitlist.
Ten years ago, couch co-op games were pretty much a dead genre, but games like It Takes Two helped to turn that around in a big way. It Takes Two was critically acclaimed and received several awards, selling over 20 million copies in four years. Its success proved that couch co-op experiences could be commercially viable, leading to a slew of similar titles since, from laid back, casual experiences to intense games that require tight coordination and patience. The Missing Tail seems to be on the cozier end of that spectrum, giving players another attractive option if they are looking to team up.
