Persona has come a long way since its humble beginnings. The series started life as a spin-off of the broader Shin Megami Tensei universe, with the very first entry, Revelations: Persona, launching back in 1996. Developed by P-Studios, an internal ATLUS division, the franchise has since grown into four additional mainline titles along with a healthy lineup of spin-offs. Just this June, ATLUS finally confirmed Persona 6, putting an end to nearly a decade of fan speculation since Persona 5 first launched, and six years since its enhanced version, Persona 5 Royal, arrived. With the franchise hitting its 30-year milestone, expanding into television feels like a fitting next step.
Who's Behind the Live-Action Adaptation
According to recent reporting, the project has already assembled a notable creative team. Christopher Monfette is attached as writer, executive producer, and showrunner, while Shawn Levy and Robert Artwood of 21 Laps — the production company behind Netflix's massive hit Stranger Things — will oversee the show. Joining them as executive producers are Story Kitchen's Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson. SEGA's Toru Nakahara, who previously produced the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog films, is also attached in an executive producing role. At this stage, it's still unclear whether the show will adapt a specific mainline Persona entry or tell an entirely new story within the franchise's universe.
This isn't the first time a Persona adaptation has been floated, either. Back in 2022, Nakahara mentioned that SEGA was exploring live-action projects based on several ATLUS properties, including Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, and Catherine. Given that Persona is by far the most internationally recognised of the three, it makes sense that it would be the one to move forward first. Netflix itself hasn't issued an official statement confirming the project, but the streamer has plenty of experience adapting video games, having found success with The Witcher in live-action and animated hits like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Devil May Cry, and Arcane. Story Kitchen, meanwhile, brings its own video game adaptation expertise to the table, currently leading development on Amazon MGM's live-action Tomb Raider series.
A Big Year for the Persona Franchise
The potential TV series adds to what has already been a packed year of announcements for Persona fans. Alongside the Persona 6 reveal, ATLUS confirmed that Persona 4 Revival will officially launch on February 18, 2027. The gacha spin-off Persona 5: The Phantom X is also marking its first anniversary with a special crossover featuring Hatsune Miku, while Persona 5 Royal continues to pick up new collaborations, most recently teaming up with Call of Duty: Mobile.
As for when fans might actually see footage from either Persona 6 or the new TV series, that timeline remains uncertain. Recent leaks have suggested Persona 6 could potentially launch sometime in late 2027, which gives some hope that more concrete announcements, on both the game and the show, could be on the way before too long.
