Legend of Zelda Movie Gets New Earlier Release Date

Nintendo and Sony Pictures announced a new release date for the highly anticipated Legend of Zelda live-action movie, and, in a bit of a surprise, the film is coming sooner than originally planned. On May 13, 2026, the news was announced by the creator of the Legend of Zelda franchise, Shigeru Miyamoto, who took to the social media platform X to make the announcement. The move signals a strong vote of confidence from Nintendo in the production, which is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious video game adaptations ever attempted.

New Release Date: From April to May
The Legend of Zelda movie has been moved up one full week to April 30, 2027, from its previously planned May 7, 2027, release date. Miyamoto credited the hard work of the production team in making the earlier release possible. This change is interesting, as the film has already seen its fair share of date changes, originally set to open on March 26, 2027, before being moved to May. Now, instead of pushing the date back any longer, bringing it forward is a considerable departure from what fans have come to expect from the Zelda franchise.

Director and Creative Team Cast
This is a live-action Legend of Zelda movie, not like the animated Super Mario movies Nintendo did before. The two leads are Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Zelda, leading what is expected to be a big cinematic event. The film is directed by Wes Ball, who helmed the Maze Runner trilogy and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. It has a screenplay co-written by Derek Connolly, who worked on Pokémon Detective Pikachu, and T. S. Nowlin, who co-wrote the Maze Runner series.

Ball has previously called the project the next big motion-capture, Avatar-like movie. Production took place in New Zealand, giving it a natural comparison to the iconic Lord of the Rings trilogy filmed in the same country.

Nintendo's Cinematic Momentum Builds Steam
Nintendo is coming off a strong run of momentum in the film space with The Legend of Zelda movie. The Super Mario Galaxy movie has been a huge hit at the international box office, proving that the Japanese gaming giant has a winning formula in turning its beloved franchises into movies.

The Zelda project, announced back in November 2023, represents the next step in Nintendo's cinematic aspirations and is widely considered to be the company's most ambitious film project to date. All signs point toward it being a landmark moment in video game movie history.

A Franchise Stuck in Delays
It's interesting that it's coming out sooner, given how long the Legend of Zelda series has had a history of delays. Ocarina of Time was originally scheduled for 1997, but was delayed to 1998. Twilight Princess was originally planned for the Nintendo GameCube in 2005, but was re-imagined for the Nintendo Wii and released in 2006. Skyward Sword was pushed back from 2010 to 2011, coming out near the end of the Wii's life cycle. Breath of the Wild was initially supposed to be released in 2015, but it didn't hit players until March 2017.

Even Tears of the Kingdom was delayed a full year after development was completed, just to give Nintendo an extra year to polish the experience. In this context, bringing the film forward, rather than delaying it, sends out a clear message of intent.

What Early Release Signals?
The one-week delay in the release date may seem like a small thing on paper, but given the well-publicized history of delays in the Zelda franchise, it's a significant symbolic gesture. It also suggests that Nintendo and Sony Pictures are not only pleased with the state of the production but are keen to show it to audiences as soon as they can.

The Legend of Zelda film will be a landmark for the series and the medium of video game movies when it hits theaters on April 30, 2027, with a renowned director, an experienced screenwriting team, a gorgeous New Zealand setting, and the full creative backing of Nintendo.
